The programme is organized in three strands that are associated with the familiarization with the concept of advanced design and its evolution through: innovation – transdisciplinarity + experimentation. The first strand concerns the role of creativity and innovation in design. The second strand concerns the tranverse communications among diverse domains for the possibility of innovative approaches through collaborations. The third strand concerns experimentation as a research methodology for advanced design.

The programme is structured in three semesters. The first two are dedicated to a parallel unfolding with transverse communications among the three clusters of Praxis, Logos and Techniques. Enhancive courses, specialization studios (intensive workshops & seminars) and lectures organized by the Scientific Committee, are given by its members as well as other extinguish personalities as professors, researchers, artists or specialized scientists, supporting the process of studies. The third semester culminates in the major theory-dissertation and design thesis.  Enhancive seminars and lectures or/and educational trip are also provided.

Course modules Praxis / Logos / Techne are available in the first two semesters and  refers to design practice (design studios), theory (design theory courses) and the combination of design and theory (research methodology courses that concerns materiality and digitality):

Α. (DS) Design / Praxis

Β. (TH) Theory / Logos

Γ. (TD) Theory and Design /Techne

The three clusters are developed in parallel, encouraging transverse conceptual shifts and communication practices. In this sense design / Praxis, theory / Logos and design-theory / Techne become areas of innovation and explore contemporary events through various means.

The Design/Praxis cluster is a series of practical but speculative design explorations. Specialization studios (duration of 1-4 weeks) included intensive workshops and lectures are structured on the basis of theoretical and practical issues defined by the current scientific agenda. Design explorations matters critical appropriation of material and advanced computational digital technologies and of the meaning that they convey, towards a speculative but pragmatic response. The design modules embrace a novel approach to critical theory and facilitate material systems and advanced technologies (from programmable matter to scripting robotic protocols) for an architecture that exposes its origin. The prime iteration of AD:ITID’s research agenda revolves around the notion of theories and epistemologies that are mobilized in order to make sense of the contemporary events; events that span from the microcosmic to macrocosmic scale (material, biological, political, ideological, architectural, urban, ecological). Research results attempt to localize themselves in that dense complexity of our perceived and constructed territories.

The Theory cluster/Logos is a series of theoretical, philosophical but still speculative explorations that questions anthropocentricism in architectural design and critically examines the role of ubiquitous technologies in the construction of architectural theories. The module spans across the first two semesters and synergistically with Praxis challenges the origins and the roles of existing and established architectural principles.

The Design-Theory cluster/Techne is a series of a critical, hands-on experimentation with advancements in technologies within a material and data-oriented milieu. From extended experimentation with organic and inorganic matter to digital simulations and advanced computation of large scale data, the emerged techniques are critically appropriated and inherent limitations are creatively exploited.
